Chilcot: Seizing the Opportunity

Roger is the Chilcot Director in the Ministry of Defence, overseeing work to ensure that the Department addresses the issues raised by the Iraq Inquiry’s Report into the UK’s involvement in the Iraq conflict 2001-09. He is also the Department’s Nominated Officer for Whistleblowing, LGBT+ Champion and Senior Champion for the Defence Humanist Network. He returned to the Department in April 2016 from a year long secondment at the professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. His career has encompassed operational and international security policy, strategic planning, resource management, corporate governance, transformation and Digital in the MOD; and spells in the National Health Service, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Home Office. Roger’s first degree was Physics with European Studies, including a year studying in Germany, followed by two Masters degrees in science policy and international relations respectively, then a political science PhD on cost and time escalation in UK defence acquisition programmes. He is a keen blogger; is Honorary Associate Professor at the Strategy and Security Institute of the University of Exeter; and outside work loves spending time with his family, skiing, hill walking, classical music and supporting his local team, Charlton Athletic.
