Forward Presence Redux

Cdr Conor O’Neill, Royal Navy

Cdr Conor O’Neill commanded HMS MONTROSE from 2017-19, culminating in a deployment spanning Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans before the ship commenced three years forward deployed in Bahrain. Now serving on the RN’s Strategic Plans team, he considers and reflects on the experience of both preparing for her extended period of time away from the UK and executing a deployment in areas previously well travelled by the RN, but which have only recently had renewed focus - and the opportunities and implications for an increasingly forward deployed posture.
